Down with Project DTO
Downtown Orlando is quickly blossoming into a happening city, and one that you aren’t just dying to escape. Each day we see the progress—peering down at the construction of the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts, riding the Sunrail, or visiting the brand new Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity. Mayor Buddy Dyer has taken this movement one step further by installing a task force charged with shaping the future of Orlando. Enter: Project DTO.
This collection of more than 70 community leaders, developers, business owners, and various advocates will pen a long list of recommendations for the growth of our urban core. And our own Founder & CEO, Bobby Jones, is among them. Splitting up into nine committees, they’ll look at:
- Arts and Culture
- Downtown Identity
- Economic Competitiveness
- Access
- Sustainability
- Urban Amenities and Open Space (Bobby’s on this one!)
- Urban Lifestyle and Tourism
- Social Fabric
- Neighborhoods and Historic Preservation
But this won’t take off without the help of this city’s everyday inhabitants. Project DTO’s task force members and consultants are soliciting ideas through projectDTO.com and social media, hinging on the #OYes / #ONo hashtag campaign. See something you love, or perhaps something Orlando could do without? Share a photo, video, link, or comment on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Google+ with the respective hashtag, and let the suggestions run rampant.
This isn’t just some sadity bureaucrats navel-gazing. Mayor Dyer has commissioned similar panels in the past, leading to tangible positive outcomes. We encourage contributing and following along over the next year to have a hand in defining the next decade for DTO.
