Today, we shine the spotlight on Vic Cao, our dedicated Development Manager who exemplifies dedication and balance with a day starting as early as 4 AM, blending professional excellence with personal well-being. Vic thrives on guiding his team through complex challenges, fostering collaboration, and takes pride in their collective achievements. His enthusiasm and commitment drive his continuous growth at PRPL. Join us as we delve into the life and motivations of Vic.

1. What does a typical day look like for you as a Development Manager at PRPL?

Personally: My day starts early, usually around 4-5 AM. I find that waking up early gives me a head start and some quiet time to plan my day. One of my key rituals is taking an ice-cold shower before 8 AM. This not only wakes me up but also invigorates me, setting a positive and energetic tone for the day.

Professionally: By 10 AM, I typically have a standup meeting of some kind, where my team and I synchronize on our tasks and goals for the day. After the standup, I dedicate a solid three hours to production and output, focusing on development tasks or strategic planning. I prioritize having lunch with my wife every day, as it is an absolute must for me to maintain a healthy work-life balance and stay connected with my family. The afternoon is reserved for dealing with any urgent issues that arise (or "fires") and attending various meetings. These meetings might involve cross-functional teams or be related to ongoing projects, ensuring that everything stays on track and any potential problems are addressed promptly.

2. What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role as a Development Manager is the opportunity to help and influence as many outcomes as possible. This includes directly steering development projects and fostering collaboration across different functions within the company. I thrive on the challenge of guiding my team through complex problems and watching our collective efforts culminate in successful projects. Being able to contribute to the broader success of the organization and seeing the positive impact of my work on both the team and the product is incredibly rewarding.

3. Share one of your favorite hobbies and explain why it brings you joy.

One of my current favorite hobbies is trying to crack the code on bringing 'ice showers' to the masses. This might seem unusual, but I'm passionate about the benefits of cold exposure, such as increased alertness, improved mood, and various health benefits. Sharing this practice with others and exploring ways to make it more accessible is exciting for me. It brings me joy to think about how I can help others experience the same benefits and possibly improve their well-being.

4. What stands out as one of your fondest memories during your time at PRPL?

One of my fondest memories at PRPL is embracing Rich in front of everyone at the summit. This moment stands out because it was a spontaneous and genuine expression of camaraderie and appreciation. It highlighted the strong bonds we have within the team and the supportive culture at PRPL. Moments like these remind me why I love being part of this company and how much we value and celebrate each other's contributions.

5. What's a place you've traveled to that left a lasting impression on you, and why?

Two places that have left a lasting impression on me are Argentina and Paris. Each offered a unique perspective on the "urban jungle." In Argentina, I was struck by the vibrant culture, passionate people, and the beautiful, diverse landscapes from bustling cities to serene natural wonders. Paris, on the other hand, captivated me with its rich history, stunning architecture, and the blend of old-world charm with modern vibrancy. Both destinations provided new insights into urban life and deepened my appreciation for different cultures and ways of living. But to see the sprawling city concrete landscape from a high vantage point was awe inspiring as well.

6. What do you find most rewarding about being part of the PRPL team?

The most rewarding aspect of being part of the PRPL team is the shared conviction and appreciation we have for our work and for each other. There is a strong sense of purpose and commitment that permeates the team, making every project we undertake feel meaningful. Collaborating with passionate and talented individuals who are equally dedicated to achieving our common goals creates an environment where innovation and excellence thrive. The collective effort and mutual support we experience daily are incredibly motivating and fulfilling.

7. What are some of your favorite books or movies?

I enjoy anything related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The stories, characters, and interconnected plots are fascinating and offer a great escape into a world of superheroes and epic adventures. Additionally, I love sharing in the joy of my kids' favorite movies, such as the Spider-Man series, the Trolls trilogy, and the latest Pokémon films. Watching these movies together not only entertains us but also strengthens our bond as a family.

8. How do you stay updated on the latest developments and trends in the tech industry?

To stay updated on the latest developments and trends in the tech industry, I follow a combination of methods. I regularly read industry blogs, subscribe to tech newsletters, and participate in online forums and communities. Attending conferences and webinars also provides valuable insights and networking opportunities. Additionally, I make it a point to engage in continuous learning through online courses and certifications to keep my skills and knowledge current. Engaging with my professional network and discussing trends with colleagues and peers further helps me stay informed and ahead of the curve.

9. Can you share a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?

One of my favorite mottos is, "Throw some paint on the wall and see what happens." This phrase, which I often say, embodies the spirit of experimentation and creativity. It encourages taking risks, trying new approaches, and not being afraid of failure. By embracing this mindset, I have found that innovation and unexpected successes often emerge. It inspires me to keep pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities in both my personal and professional life.

10. What motivates you to continually grow and improve in your role?

The primary motivation for me to continually grow and improve in my role is the desire to help others. Whether it's removing friction in processes, solving problems, or mentoring team members, I find immense satisfaction in making a positive impact. Additionally, the dynamic nature of the tech industry and the constant emergence of new challenges and opportunities drive me to stay updated and continuously enhance my skills. The aspiration to contribute to the success of my team and the organization as a whole keeps me focused on growth and improvement.
