Mastering Leadership with SLANT: A Principle for Effective Engagement By Bobby Jones

In the dynamic world of digital innovation, effective leadership is more crucial than ever. Over our nearly two-decade journey at Purple, Rock, Scissors, we've honed various methods to foster better communication and engagement. One standout principle we've embraced is SLANT: Sit Up, Listen, Ask Questions, Nod, and Track the Speaker. This approach isn't just about improving how we communicate; it's about cultivating a culture of active participation and mutual respect.

Sit Up

When we talk about "Sit Up," it's about more than just posture—it's a posture of readiness and attentiveness. It signifies our commitment to fully engage with the conversation, honoring the speaker and their insights. In the dynamic environment of our digital agency, where ideas flow freely, maintaining an alert posture is essential.

Listen

At the heart of effective communication lies listening. It's about truly understanding the speaker's message. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get distracted, but intentional listening ensures we grasp the nuances being shared. This skill is vital for making informed decisions and fostering deeper connections among team members.

Ask Questions

Asking questions is a cornerstone of the SLANT principle. It shows engagement and a genuine interest in the discussion, inviting further exploration and valuing diverse perspectives. At Purple, Rock, Scissors, we encourage a culture of curiosity because asking thoughtful questions not only enriches our understanding but also nurtures a collaborative atmosphere where everyone feels heard.

Nod

Although seemingly simple, nodding carries significant meaning—it's a non-verbal way to express agreement and understanding. Nodding encourages the speaker, affirming that their message is received positively. This gesture fosters morale and creates a supportive environment conducive to open dialogue and mutual respect.

Track the Speaker

Tracking the speaker involves more than just listening—it's about maintaining eye contact and observing their body language. It demonstrates genuine engagement and respect in a world full of distractions. By giving our full attention, we build trust and strengthen interpersonal connections.

The Impact of SLANT

Implementing SLANT has profoundly shaped our organizational culture. It promotes active participation, enhances communication effectiveness, and strengthens team relationships. By adopting SLANT, leaders at Purple, Rock, Scissors empower every team member to contribute meaningfully and feel valued.

SLANT isn't just a set of techniques; it's a mindset that enhances every interaction—whether in team meetings, client presentations, or casual conversations. This principle ensures we remain present, engaged, and connected, fostering collaboration and driving innovation.

SLANT serves as a powerful leadership tool, transforming our communication practices and guiding our approach to effective leadership. By embodying the principles of sitting up, listening attentively, asking insightful questions, nodding affirmatively, and tracking the speaker, we cultivate a more engaged and cohesive team dynamic. At Purple, Rock, Scissors, we are committed to embodying SLANT in all our interactions, reinforcing our dedication to effective leadership and collaborative success.

ABOUT

Founder + CEO

Bobby Jones started Purple, Rock, Scissors with a simple belief: great work comes from great people doing what they love. As Founder and CEO, he leads a curious, talented crew of strategists, designers, and technologists who bring bold ideas to life across digital and experiential platforms. His leadership has shaped award-winning work for clients like Google, Meta, Delta, Disney, and LEGO, while also expanding PRPL’s impact through embedded talent and staff augmentation for some of the world’s most innovative brands.

With over 20 years at the intersection of creativity and technology, Bobby brings equal parts vision and velocity. He’s just as comfortable mapping a brand ecosystem as he is sketching ideas on a whiteboard, and he thrives in that sweet spot between art and engineering. What drives him most is building teams, shaping culture, and mentoring the next generation of creative thinkers.

When he’s not building bold experiences for brands, Bobby’s out exploring the outdoors and soaking up every moment of being a dad.
