Weekly Digital Roundup (1.27.14)
What do you get when you cross weiners with widget link schemes? Today's roundup! Without further ado, here’s what we found to be the biggest news, so you may comfortably remain snuggled under a rock.
Pinny to make a Penny
Pinterst CEO Ben Silbermann explains his plans for building an ad business this year. With the social network being used by 20% of online U.S. adults, Silbermann expects for Pinterest to start generating revenue soon (surprise, surprise) by charging advertisers for promotional units within the site’s pages. If you’ve got a retail business geared toward women, here’s your avenue.
Facebook’s Mobile Ad Network
The social network is taking a stab at its form of a mobile ad network, which allows marketers to place advertisements inside third-party applications. Currently, a small group of brands are being allowed to test these ads. Facebook is extending its rich targeting to improve the relevancy of the ads people see, boost reach for Facebook ads, and help developers better monetize their apps. Money, money, monaaaay.
Take a Wide in the Weiner
If you’ve ever wanted to take the Wienermobile for a spin, Oscar Mayer’s giving a few lucky hotdog fans the coveted keys to the fun, phallic car. To enter, you must tweet using the hashtag #Tweet2Lease. This is the first time the iconic vehicle has been available for the public to borrow. We’ll see if it’s the last.
Widget Link Schemes
Google updated its definition of Widget Link Schemes as “Keyword-rich, hidden or low-quality links embedded in widgets that are distributed across various sites…” So if you’re using widgets as a link building strategy, you might wanna take a peek to make sure you don’t get slapped with a penalty. Exciting stuff, we know.
Indie Objects of Affection
YouTube is expanding its reach at the Sundance Film Festival by wooing the indie crowd. They’re airing trailers for three independent films featured on its platform before the festival’s screenings during the Sundance’s Short Program. The video titan hopes to attract more professional creators and draw in more advertisers...and we all know what that means. See the three films here.
