Weekly Digital Roundup (11.25.13)
Lots o' social media marketing updates this week from Twitter, Pinterest, and Polyvore! Without further ado, here’s what we found to be the biggest news, so you may comfortably remain snuggled under a rock.
Retail Giant Leverages JLo
Kohl’s ran a Twitter campaign starring Jennifer Lopez, where fans tweeted to choose her route to the American Music Awards stage, all in real time. The whole campaign culminated in TV ads that aired during the award show last night, and it was all a big hit. Who wouldn’t want to control JLo? 14-year-old you agrees.
Place Pins & Pinterest API
Two big updates from Pinterest happened this past week. First, you can now take pins on vacation. A new type of location-based pin was added called Place Pins. These pins enable users to map out locations of all the items they share on boards. Users can plan travel adventures by curating a board with pins mapping out restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing destinations. Secondly, Pinterest opened its API to retail partners, including Walmart and Zappos. Brands can now display real-time pins and showcase most-pinned items directly on their websites.
Don’t Ignore Polyvore
Social shopping is set to skyrocket around the holidays—how predictable. But there’s one social network you might not have heard of that accounts for 20% of social-commerce-traffic: Polyvore. This hefty percentage beats out Pinterest and Twitter! Plus, Polyvore users typically spend more than four times as much on their purchases when compared with Facebook users. Maybe it’s time to consider the shopping-fanatics’ social network.
Socialing with Style
Michael Kors takes to Instagram to promote its latest Selma handbag in a global social campaign. A photo mosaic of the handbag made up of 5,000 user-generated images was on display at the Tokyo National Museum this week. The brand wanted to give the digital campaign a physical presence, which helped to boost engagement and interest, and user-generated fan images were submitted using the hashtag #MTokyo. Way to go, Mikey K.!
2014 Social Media Predictions

Tweetin’ Travelers
Why call to make a hotel reservation, when you could just tweet? Loews Hotels has bridged the gap by allowing users to make hotel reservation at 16 of its hotels via Twitter. Travelers can tweet to @Loews_Hotels using the hashtag #BookLowes. A Lowes travel planner will start a conversation to answer any questions. When the traveler is ready to book, the planner will tweet a link to a secure chat conversation to process payment information.
Happy Thanksgiving week!
