Weekly Digital Roundup (12.9.13)
From Google+ on Giving Tuesday to Facebook reach giving grief, this past week was somewhat of a mild emotional roller coaster. Without further ado, here’s what we found to be the biggest news, so you may comfortably remain snuggled under a rock.
Mob City Gets Social
TNT’s newest drama, “Mob City,” is taking to Twitter to build buzz and engagement for its television premiere. The first episode script will be released via tweet using the hashtag #MobScript, and the campaign will use Twitter Cards to embed videos, photos, and other content into tweets to entice users to watch the premiere to find out the surprise ending.
Like Facebook, Like Instagram
Private messages could be in Instagram’s future. It’s parent company, Facebook (duh), has been preparing to launch a private messaging feature that would allow users to communicate with each other through an email address. Looks like Facebook is making strides to close the gap between the two social networks, potentially in time for the holidays. What a gift!
Apple Buys Topsy
Apple’s latest purchase is Topsy, the social media analytics firm specializing in Twitter. This platform indexes and categorizes messages on Twitter to identify key subjects, users, and events. It remains hazy why a primarily hardware-oriented company would invest in this realm, but we’re sure interested to find out! Learn more about this buyout and Topsy here.
G+ Giving Tuesday
Last week saw excessive amounts of consumerism, as usual, but on the flip-side, the rise of Giving Tuesday. Many organizations took part with campaigns in support of this newfound “holiday,” and one of our favorites was Google+. The social network held a Hangout-a-thon with celebrity guest appearances to raise funds for various charitable causes. How thoughtful!
Organic FB Reach Falling Short
If you want your Facebook campaign to succeed, you’re going to have to pay for it. A representative for the social titan said, “We're getting to a place where because more people are sharing more things, the best way to get your stuff seen if you're a business is to pay for it.” With the increasing volume of content noise being shared on Facebook, it’s apparent that you’ve got to dole out the dollas to make people hollas.Until next week!
