Weekly Digital Roundup (6.9.14)
WWDC trumped announcements in the industry last week, but social media was hot on its heels with updates from several primary platforms. Without further ado, here’s what we found to be the biggest news, so you may comfortably remain snuggled under a rock.
Fresh Picked Apple
Apple's WWDC last week put the spotlight right smack on software, and didn't deviate a bit into new hardware and devices. But that didn't mean the crowd wasn't pleased; in fact, it was quite the opposite, with the slew of announcements on iOS8, OS X Yosemite, new programming language Swift, and more. The fresh set of developer tools will keep our kind occupied long after the roar dies down. Catch up on all that was announced here.
Foursquare Pivots
Over the past several months, Foursquare has shifted its focus from conventional location-based social networking to a more data-driven recommendation platform. With a new ad platform and changes to the app, the company plans to increase revenue and change their business model. CEO Dannis Crowley says, "In the first two quarters of this year, we'll make more money than we did all of last year." Ballsy.
Mygosh, Myspace
Remember all those embarrassing photos you stored on Myspace? They're coming back to haunt you. Myspace is reaching out to former users with emails that include potentially embarrassing photos in an effort to reengage the audience it once had. Spring cleaning has a whole new meaning.
Facebook Ad Evangelizin'
Facebook hits the road for a five-city tour to promote its advertising platform to small businesses around the country. "We want to take the money that helps you grow your business," said Facebook Director of Small Business Dan Levy. Such appropriate timing with their long-awaited response to the question as to why organic reach has plummeted.
Lollapabooza
Jack Daniels is asking its followers to share their summer photos for a chance to win Lollapalooza tickets! The brand is promoting its new Tennessee Honey Whiskey with a mobile image-sharing campaign. Sounds like a pretty sweet prize to us!
Promoted Pins for All
Pinterest announced that it will open up its promoted pins ad platform to all businesses. In addition to the new ads, it will also offer business accounts more in-depth analytics. This is a huge step for the social network and can potentially be a huge revenue stream. Business who are interested are invited to sign up for the waiting list, and you'll be seeing the promoted pins rolled out over the coming months. Thanks for tuning in!
